Autism Twitter Day

I am putting together an event at Twitter to promote positive autism awareness. This is still in the planning stage and not yet finalized on the date, number of hours and time frame for this to take place.

I placed an inquiry on HARO - Help A Reporter Out last week. Here is that posting which appeared in the afternoon edition Thursday, November 20, 2008:

"Will be promoting positive autism awareness on twitter one day in mid December. Seeking products geared to the autism and asperger community to give away as prizes for questions answered and pop quizzes on the subject. Looking for products to cover all age groups and including sensory type items. Here is a listing showing all those in the autism/asperger community on Twitter.

I can also do reviews on my autism site. I am listed at www.twitter.com/autismfamily Help brighten the lives of autism families by contributing to this positive event."

If you are also a member of twitter or joining twitter, please post your ID here so I can add it to the page listing all autism connections. If you have a product you would like to offer for one of the giveaways please contact me through email listed at this blog or through twitter direct message system (DM).

I would like to find out when the majority of families who are on twitter can participate in this event. I have a poll here for a few days, please comment here in regard to your vote.

I need to know if it is best on a weekend day or weekday. I see many events taking place on twitter and they all seem to be at night on a weekday. I am on the west coast and would prefer Friday or Tuesday so I can prepare and be ready while my other son is at school. I am running for Secretary of the CAC with LAUSD and will be at elections on Monday.

I have been thinking that 4-6 hours is too long and would like to try it at two to three hours. If you have an opinion on this please give me some feedback so I can finalize this before the end of this month, get a logo or something for a button to promote the event and share with others. Plus I still need to get all the pics of the giveaways and have a sign up with Mr. Linky for those who want to attend.

Again, please take part in the poll and offer any thoughts in the comments. I am using my Pecs Club Ning Site and created an autism twitter group to post ideas and examples, a brainstorming group for this event.

Hi Bonnie, Great idea - I am wheresthebox on Twitter. I voted for Friday because I think traffic is less on the weekends and because that Tuesday is jam packed for me.

I am on Eastern Time (PA) and can participate between 9am-12pm, or from 7pm-10pm if the morning doesn't work. Depending on how it all works out, I might be able to do my Friday post at 5MFSN about it, which goes live at 9am as well.

If the weekend works out better for people, I am fairly flexible on times.

I have some Bounce DVD's (music therapy, aimed at preschool/early elementary) I won a while back that have never been opened and would be willing to give one of those away.

Feel free to email me at trish[at]anotherpieceofthepuzzle[dot]com to discuss further.

I would go with a day with a lot of traffic. I think that would be a week day.
My kid has aspergers.

I voted Saturday but I could do Friday night after the boys go to bed too. I don't have any products but I'd be happy to blog about it. If it ends up being a time I can't join in on Twitter I will still blog about it ahead of time to spread the word :).

I voted for Saturday and any time is great for me. Working with so many time zones may end up being a headache at first but the event is so worth it.

Kudos.

What a great idea! I don't have an autistic family member myself, but I volunteer each week at a therapeutic horseback riding facility and have several autistic kids and adults that I've been working with. I would love to be involved in raising some awareness. I'm twitter.com/jackiebaker. I'll follow you.

I've also written some posts about the benefits of therapeutic riding on my horse blog, if anyone is interested. Just click on the category "therapeutic riding" in the left sidebar for posts with information and some of my personal experiences.

My wife and I would love to participate. Our son, 14, is autistic.

My twitter page is www.twitter.com/coop179

I don't have much to offer as my wife is a SAHM and I am a self-employed web designer, but I would be willing to volunteer my services if there was an interest. I can do web design, print and video production. Along with search engine optimization for websites.

Thank you for doing this. :) I'm 35 and I find that it's often still a struggle to remind myself to pass information like this along. It's just not been part of my makeup to "share" information like this, but particularly now that I believe I'm on the spectrum, I'm working hard to reinvent myself with a routine of sharing. :) So I posted a link to this announcement via my Twitter account @DataFaucet.

I just completed an all-day neuro-testing session yesterday. I'll have a follow up with the results some time in the first week of January. Wish me luck! :)
